The Tara Airlines plane was flying on a popular tourist route before it simply vanished without any trace or a distress call.

So far search and rescue helicopters have been unable to take to the sky in the area where the plane was last located due to cloudy weather, officials said.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said in a statement: "Helicopters are ready to take off for search from Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Jomsom once weather conditions improve. Army and police search teams have left towards the site."

A search and rescue team has been deployed to the area near the world's seventh-highest mountain, Mount Dhaulagiri, standing at 8,167m, a police official said.

When the plane disappeared it was on a 15-minute scheduled flight to the mountain town of Jomsom.

It had taken off from the resort town of Pokhara, 125 miles east of Kathmandu.

The Tara Airlines plane lost contact with the communication tower shortly after takeoff.

The airline confirmed that there were two Germans, four Indians, and 16 Nepalese, including three crew members on board.

There had been thick cloud cover in the Pokhara-Jomson region since early morning, the countries weather office stated. It had been raining for several days but flights had been operating as usual.
