A young Algerian woman has suffered serious burns after being doused in petrol and set on fire by a neighbour after she refused his marriage proposal. The victim has been flown to Spain for emergency medical treatment.
28-year-old Ryma, from Makouda, Tizi Ouzou province of northern Algeria suffered third and fourth-degree burns all over her body, as reported by Algerian news outlet TSA.
The victim is a French teacher, who on September 26 was asked for her hand in marriage by her neighbour. When she rejected his advances, he took his revenge by covering the young woman in petrol and setting her on fire.
Ryma was rushed to the Tzi Ouzou University Hospital on the day of the attack and admitted into intensive care. However, due to the severity of her injuries the decision was made to transfer the victim to Spain for specialist treatment.
Ryma was transferred to Madrid by plane on October 14 and admitted to the Quironsalud University Hospital for ongoing treatment on what will be a long and difficult road to recovery.
