Anatoly Karpov: Former World Chess Champion Attacked In Moscow

Former world champion chess player Anatoly Karpov has been left in serious condition in hospital after being attacked outside the State Duma headquarters in Moscow, Russia.

Former World Chess Champion, former Soviet chess grandmaster, and member of Russia's State Duma, Anatoly Karpov, is said to be in a serious condition in hospital after being found unresponsive outside the State Duma over the weekend.


Karpov was unconscious when he was found and was rushed into intensive care after suffering a fractured left femur and a closed head fracture. According to reports he also had severe alcohol intoxication.



Andrei Jovalyov, a Russian businessman said that Karpov was attacked by unknown assailants "when he was leaving the State Duma, there, on Tverskaya through the arch, he was hit on the head."


He added: "He has been hospitalized. Introduced into an artificial coma, in intensive care. We pray for his health."


Anatoly Karpov has been an elected Member of the State Duma in Russian since 2006, he has chaired the Commission for Ecological Safety and Environmental Protection of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation. He has also been a member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Defence since 2007.
