Candida Cristal Vasquez was reported missing in late July, authorities believe that the former radio presenter who also worked in communications for the local police has been the latest victim of cartel violence against the media.

Luis Guillermo Benitez, the major of Mazatlan, told reporters on Saturday that forensic tests were still being conducted to confirm that the body found was that of Ms Vasquez, but he added that "everything indicates that it is her."

The State Attorney General made a statement on Friday, saying that family members had identified the body, and confirmed that it was Ms Vazquez, but they could not officially confirm this until the forensic tests had been carried out.

2022 has already been the deadliest year on record in Mexico for members of the press being murdered, according to Article 19, eighteen journalists have been killed so far this year.
