The victim was fatally stabbed at around 11:45pm on Boxing Day at The Crane nightclub on Adderley Street, Digbeth.

Paramedics attended the scene but despite their best efforts, the 23-year-old was pronounced dead around 30 minutes later.

The club was hosting a Boxing Day event that started at 3:00pm, featuring DJ Marco Carola.

West Midlands Police said they believe the victim was approached by a group before being stabbed and are urging anyone who was in the club to get in contact.

Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood said: "This was a young man enjoying himself with friends on a Boxing Day night out.

"We know there were hundreds of people in the nightclub at the time. While we've spoken to a number of them already, we still need to hear from anyone who was there and who witnessed or even filmed what happened."

Sydnee Power, 23, who was in attendance at the club, told the PA news agency that there was a "group of lads who were looking to cause trouble.

"As soon as me and my friends walked in, we got a very weird vibe and the atmosphere wasn't good."

Police remain at the scene while they work through CCTV footage and gather evidence.

No arrests have been made.

The venue released a statement saying the staff were "deeply shocked and saddened" by the attack, and that their "thoughts are with the victim, and his family and friends." A New Year's Eve event that was due to take place at The Crane has been cancelled.
