An elephant killed a woman by trampling her to death before returning to stampede on her corpse during her funeral.

The animal had escaped from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary in Mayurbhanj, approximately 200km away from where it tramped 70-year-old Maya Murmu to death while she was collecting water in Raipal village, Eastern India, on Thursday, police confirmed.

The woman died in hospital from her injuries and her body was placed on a funeral pyre that evening.

Press Trust of India reported that the same elephant returned and trampled on her corpse while her family performed last rites.

The family continued with the funeral once the elephant had left

According to stats from the World Wildlife Fund, elephants kill approximately 100 to 300 people each year in India.
