Paedophile Ian Wilkinson, 64, was handed a nine year prison sentence for historic sex offences.

64-year-old Ian Wilkinson of Ormskirk Road, Up Holland, Lancashire, was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault against a boy under the age of 14.

The paedophile appeared before Liverpool Crown Court yesterday (January 31) where he was handed a nine-year prison sentence.

A jury heard how Wilkinson performed sex acts on the boy and forced him to perform sex acts on him.

Simon Christie, prosecuting, read out a statement to the court on behalf of the victim, he said: "My whole world unravelled - I went from being an innocent cheeky young lad to being a lying, cheating, alcohol and drug addicted man."

Kevin Batch, defending, told the court how his client was receiving palliative care for terminal cancer in prison - adding: "This is a man who, in June last year, was told that sadly his cancer was effectively untreatable. He is not expecting to see the end of the summer."

Following a trial, Ian Wilkinson, who has no previous convictions, was found guilty of all nine counts of indecent assault.

He appeared via video link from HMP Altcourse where he was jailed for nine years and ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for life.

After the sentencing, Judge Gary Woodhall addressed Wilkinson directly, he said: "He did not know what was happening or that what you were doing was wrong. He would remain frozen.

"It has created ongoing, deeply damaging issues for him to have to deal with. You had the audacity to suggest that he was somehow to blame.

"He was not to blame. You have shown no genuine remorse for what happened.

"This was offending carried out purely for your own sexual gratification. The hurt and distress it has caused is palpable.

"You are clearly in ill health, with a terminal diagnosis. You are unlikely to live beyond this year.

"You have been able to live almost your entire life unaffected by your offending, unlike your victim. It is likely that you will die in prison."
