According to a statement, reported by the official Iranian news agency IRNA, the Mossad agents had been sent to Iran to "perpetrate terrorist attacks", but it said that "all of them were identified and arrested before they could carry out acts of sabotage".

Iran claimed that those who had been arrested were in contact with Mossad via a neighbouring country and had entered Iran through the Kurdistan region.

They claimed that the supposed Israeli "spies" were carrying modern telecommunications and operational equipment, as well as being armed with powerful explosives. The statement claimed that those arrested intended to perpetrate unprecedented acts of sabotage and terrorist attacks in sensitive locations and on pre-determined targets. The news agency reported that all those involved had been arrested and their equipment confiscated.
