A former female prison officer at HMP Maidstone has been sentenced for having a sexual relationship with a convicted murderer, resulting in her having his child.
29-year-old Kathryn Trevor, of Sham Farm Road in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, had a sexual relationship with a prisoner at HMP Maidstone between February 21, 2020, and September 25, 2021.
Trevor had a relationship with Ghanaian national David Quartey who is serving a life sentence for murder. The disgraced prison officer had a child by Quartey and used an alias to stay in contact with him while she was not on duty, she was also sharing information with his family in Ghana.
The prisoner had an illegal mobile phone hidden in his cell that Trevor used to keep in contact with him.
Trevor pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to two counts of wilfully neglecting to perform her duty and wilful misconduct while holding public office.
A judge sentenced Trevor to 20 months imprisonment, suspended for two years - meaning she will serve no time behind bars.
Detective Constable Nick Gossage, said: "Trevor was employed to ensure the safety and good order of the prison she worked in.
"Her behaviour over an extended period of time undermined this, putting her colleagues and the prisoners at risk.
"Her conviction should serve as a reminder to those that hold a position of power and trust that it is not be abused and that action will be taken against them if they act in this way."
