18-year-old Lily Sullivan was discovered drowned in a pond after being "murdered by a father when they left a nightclub Christmas party together", an inquest has heard.

The teenager had been partying with friends just hours prior to her body being found in the Mill Pond close to a castle in the historic town of Pembroke on December 17.

31-year-old scaffolder, Lewis Haines, from Lamphey, has been charged with her murder after allegedly strangling Lily, a court heard last month.

The opening of an inquest into Lily's death at Haverfordwest County Hall on Thursday heard that police were called to the ponds at 4.12am "following reports of a female body in the water."

Resuscitation was attempted at the scene, despite these efforts, Lily was pronounced dead at 6.02am, the inquest heard.

Coroner Paul Bennett said a full inquest into her death could not take place until an ongoing criminal probe concludes.

Bennett added: "The process by which the investigation has been opened has been overtaken by events."

The coroner has now adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed at a later time.

Lewis Haines, a scaffolder from Lamphey, Pembrokeshire, was remanded in custody following his arrest and appearance at Swansea Crown Court last month, he is yet to enter a plea.

Prosecutor Michael Cray told the court that Lily had been seen on CCTV in Paddles nightclub and then again later walking through town, before later being found dead.

He said that the victim had not known Haines before the night of the alleged murder, telling the court that Lily had been strangled.

Lily's family paid tribute to her, saying: "Lily was a kind and caring daughter who will be deeply missed by everyone and the family are very thankful to all of Lily's friends for their support."

Locals have paid tribute to Lily by placing flowers at the Mill Pond in memory of her.

Byron John, a family friend added: "Lily was a sweet and lovely young woman, well-spoken and very grown-up for her years. "She had the whole of her life in front of her. It's just terrible. Her mother Anna doted on her, she was an only child and they were very close."

Friends described Lily as a typical 18-year-old who loved music, nights out, and fashion, they also said that she was a gifted horsewoman and had grown up with a love for the countryside.

Lewis Haines played cricket for Lamphey Cricket Club, and has been described as a man who "likes to party and celebrate the wins."
