A man has been arrested and detained in a psychiatric hospital following a knife rampage in Bedworth, Warwickshire that left 11 people injured.

Three people had been stabbed before 8 am on Saturday morning in Bedworth town centre.

Authorities said that the lone attacker then walked down two busy residential streets, attacking random passers-by.

Before the arrest was made another 8 people were attacked and left with none life-threatening injuries.

A man in his 20s who was one of those stabbed remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The other two, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital for treatment but have since been discharged

It was initially reported that the perpetrator was seen wielding a knife, however, more recent reports have suggested that he used scissors in at least one of the attacks.

Police have said that they believe the rampage began when the attacker banged on the front door of a woman's home and stabbed her in the face with a pair of scissors when she opened the door.

A neighbour of the victim, Sheila Corcoran, 76, said: "She managed to get him off her because he tried to enter the house. She managed to get him loose, but she was attacked in the face.

"I did hear something bang, but I just thought she had dropped something. Now I know it was her banging the door.

"She managed to close her door and lock it quickly. Later on, she had to go to hospital for stitches. There is blood all on her door and a trail of blood all outside my house."

Detective Superintendent Rich Simpkins said: "This was a nasty incident which has left a number of people with injuries and I know this will cause the community great concern.

"The public can expect to see a heightened police presence in and around Bedworth town centre to provide reassurance while our officers continue to conduct their enquiries.
