A 52-year-old married man from Bradford has been jailed for having sex with a pony, after his arrest, almost 1,000 Beastiality searches were discovered on his phone.
Abdul Ghani, 52, of Beamsley Road, Frizinghall, Bradford, had previously pleaded guilty in 2018 to having intercourse with an animal in a field on the outskirts of Bradford where the Shetland Pony and other horses lived.
Ghani was jailed for ten months on August 8, 2022, at Bradford Crown Court. Sentencing him, Judge Andrew Hatton said: "Owners of horses and ponies are entitled to feel their animals are safe from people like you. The message must go out that this sort of grossly unnatural behaviour will not be considered for suspended sentences of imprisonment."
Judge Hatton added that this wasn't an isolated incident, it was "a well-planned and deliberate descent into bestiality."
Michael Collins, prosecuting, told the court how police had uncovered 993 internet searches on Ghani's phone referring to sexual acts with animals, mainly horses.
In August, 2018, a mother and daughter who own the Pony became concerned about items they had found in the horses' field shelter. They found a bag of carrots, a scrubbing brush, a cucumber, a torch, and a till receipt.
The next month, the pony's tail had tape on it, bandage, and black tape was also found nearby, as well as a lump of sugar - not something the owners would feed to their horses. The concerns of the owners were reported to the police and the pony was examined by a vet, who found DNA that matched Ghani inside the animal.
Ghani's barrister, Jonathan Turner, said that his client was ashamed and extremely embarrassed by his actions and that he had lived a law-abiding life since the incident that happened almost four years ago.
Ghani was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he committed the act and claimed that was why he did it. He has since been sent to a psychiatrist who did not find him to be mentally ill.
Judge Hatton said that even with overwhelming evidence against him, Ghani had denied the offence up until the day of his trial.
As well as being jailed for ten months, Ghani must also sign the sex offenders register for ten years.
