This incident took place last month at the family home in Orlando, Florida, when 26-year-old Reggie Mabry was playing video games, one of his three children found a gun and fired it, striking Mabry in the back.

Police said both Mabry and his 28-year-old wife, Marie Ayala were convicted felons and were prohibited from owning guns.

Sheriff John Mina of Orange County told a press conference on Monday that both of them were on probation for narcotics and child neglect charges.

Marie Ayala was charged with manslaughter, culpable negligence, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Authorities said that if the mother is convicted of manslaughter, she could face up to 15 years in jail.

It remains unclear exactly how the 2-year-old boy found the Glock 19 firearm, but authorities confirmed that Ms Ayala had confessed that "any child in the room could have figured out how to get the gun out of the bag."

Sheriff Mina said: "The gun was not properly stored. In fact, it was easily accessible even to a 2-year-old, and the result is a tragedy."

When first responders arrived at the scene of the shooting on 26 May, they initially thought that Mr Mabry had shot himself.

After the investigation began, it was uncovered that Ms Ayala had heard a loud bang, causing her to jump out of bed, this is when she found her husband bleeding on the floor.

Ms Ayala told the police that it was her toddler who had fired the gun.

Sheriff Mina added: "These young children have effectively lost both of their parents. And a young child has to live his life knowing he shot his father." Suspect Shoots Marshall County Sherrif Dead With Concealed Gun After Being Allowed To Go For A Smoke
