A judge is set to officially sentence Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz to life in prison today for the killing of 17 students and staff at a school in Parkland with a semi-automatic rifle.
Last month a jury voted to spare the 24-year-old murderer from the death penalty, instead opting for sentencing him to life in prison without the possibility of parole following one of the deadliest mass shootings in US history.
Earlier this year, Cruz pleaded guilty to premeditated murder.
Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer agreed to a prosecution request to first allow relatives of Cruz's victims to address the court before the sentence was handed down.
Victim impact statements were heard as the sentencing proceedings began on Tuesday.
Nikolas Cruz was 19 years old at the time of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
