57-year-old Roy Woodward, of Runcorn and Widnes, has died in a hospice after being taken out of HMP Altcourse after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. An inquest held on Friday at Liverpool coroners' court was told how Woodward was in custody after being sentenced on April 4 to 21 years in prison at Chester Crown Court.

Woodward was admitted to Aintree Hospital, escorted by a prison officer on June 14 where he was given a terminal lung cancer diagnosis before being transferred to Woodlands Hospice.

He was put on end-of-life care on July 21 and was pronounced dead on July 23.

Woodward was jailed in April for a string of disgusting crimes, he was found guilty of 14 counts of abuse, namely four of rape, eight of indecently assaulting a child, and two of indecency with a child.

Some of the charges represented multiple offences that Woodward committed over a period of time, the abuse beginning when the victim was just four years old.

At his trial in January, Matthew Dunford, prosecuting, told jurors that Woodward, who had a previous conviction of child rape, abused the girl throughout her childhood and after she turned 16.

Judge Patrick Thompson told the jury at the sentencing that Woodward gave his victim sweets to make sure she kept silent and plied her with alcohol to assist in his grooming.

He added that the abuse began when the girl was very young and turned into a "campaign of rape" as the victim grew older.

Judge Thompson sentenced the child rapist to 21 years in prison and said he should be considered a dangerous offender and a "very high risk to children".

Woodward's wife, Gaynor Woodward, 58, was convicted of one count of cruelty and sentenced to four years in prison for her part in his horrific sex abuse.
