A vile paedophile who used his position as a headteacher to sexually assault young boys over a 12-year-period has been jailed.
76-year-old Christopher Pickup taught at two primary schools in Oldham during the 1970s and 1980s before becoming headteacher, he sexually abused young boys between the ages of eight and 11 over a 12-year period.
The vile beast molested children on school trips, in classrooms, and in his office. Minshull Street Crown Court, in Manchester, heard how his actions were part of the "systematic and calculated" sexual abuse of children.
Earlier in the year, Christopher Pickup was convicted of 37 charges of sexual assault following a trial. On Friday, he was jailed for ten years.
Daniel Calder, prosecuting, told the court how Pickup was "admired and respected" by parents and colleagues and was described as a teacher that "everybody loved".
Mr Calder said that the disgraced headteacher had "another side", in which 19 young boys fell "prey" to his sickening abuse.
"During class, the defendant would invite the child up to his desk at the front and make the child stand at the side of his desk which offered an obstructive view of what was happened", Mr Calder told the court.
He added: "It was during that time that he would touch and fondle the boy's genitals over their clothing."
Mr Calder said that by the time Pickup had moved to a different school and became headteacher, he was "adept at engineering situations" that provided him access to the boys he wanted to abuse.
"They often took place in the headmaster's office, which the Crown says is a hallmark of the brazen way in which the offences were committed. They were not always in private, this also happened in public areas like classrooms and the badminton courts." The prosecutor added.
Pickup abused some of the victims while on a school trip after sneaking into the boy's dormitory and molesting them under the covers.
In one particular incident, Pickup made up an excuse to isolate a young boy and took him to his bedroom, where he exposed the boy's buttocks and carried out corporal punishment before exposing himself to the child.
Judge Bernadette Baxter, sentencing, said: "Each child thought they were the only one and were fearful they would not be believed or that they would get in trouble. You knew very well that would be the response given the esteem you were held in by the entire school community. "I have no doubt that not only the abuse but the risk involved with it was part of the thrill you sought."
Christopher Pickup, of Underwood Way, Shaw, Oldham, was jailed for 10 years and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely. He was also ordered to pay £58,760 court costs.
Detective Constables Craig Rice and Natalie Sykes, said: "Experiencing sexual abuse at any stage in life can have a devastating and long-lasting impact on an individual's life, but to experience it as a child by someone who you respect and trust is unfathomable.
"This investigation demonstrates our ongoing and determined commitment to ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice. "We would like to commend and thank the victims for the courage, strength, and dignity they have all demonstrated in coming forward to the police and supporting an investigation into Christopher Pickup.
"We hope that the unanimous guilty verdicts by an independent jury and today's sentencing offers closure to them knowing that he is finally facing the consequences of his actions. "We would like to take this opportunity to offer our assurances to anyone who has experienced sexual abuse and has not yet come forward, that GMP will do all we can to support you throughout the process."
