Phoenix Police Release Bodycam Footage Of Shootout That Resulted In A Female Officer Being Shot
Phoenix Police released this video showing the bodycam footage of a shooting between two police officers and the suspect, Nicholas Cowan on April 14. The incident resulted in a female officer being shot and a 3-day manhunt ensuing before Cowan was arrested.
The Phoenix Police Department has released the above video that shows the bodycam footage from an officer-involved shooting that took place on April 14, 2022. The incident occurred in the area of Cave Creek and Beardsley Road when two police officers responded to a call from a woman who claimed she was concerned for her suicidal boyfriend, 35-year-old suspect, Nicholas Cowan.
The woman told the attending officers that she came to the gas station to make a report because she was worried about a potential violent confrontation between Cowan and the police if they came to where the couple was staying.
The two police officers were talking to the girlfriend at the gas station when the suspect arrived at around 10:35 a.m., driving a light blue sedan. When the female officer started to approach Cowan's vehicle, he raised a gun and shot her, causing her to drop to the ground.
Cowan then began to shoot at the male officer, who returned fire while taking cover. A short exchange took place before the suspect fled from the scene.
Cowan then abandoned his vehicle and called a friend to pick him up, a police manhunt then ensued for the following 3 days until they received a tip-off that led them to a property in Scottsdale, near 66th Street and Osborne Road.
Nicholas Cowan was eventually arrested after officers from the tactical support bureau surrounded the location and negotiated with him for several hours.
Police utilized non-lethal methods, including tear gas, to encourage Cowan to surrender and avoid another shootout.
Cowan was then taken to the hospital for treatment for injuries he had suffered during the initial shooting.
After being released from the hospital, Nicholas Cowan was taken to jail and charged with two accounts of attempted murder.
The female officer who was injured in the shooting survived the incident and is still receiving treatment.
