The suspected Russian agent was arrested as he was about to board a flight out of the UK and was taken to Hammersmith police station late last night by officers. His arrest came as a result of a joint investigation conducted by the Met's SO15 counterterrorism unit and Britain's intelligence organisation MI5.

A Met police spokesperson said: "Officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command arrested a man in his 40s at Gatwick airport on Monday. He remains in custody".

Another police source told The Sun Online: "The suspect is believed to have been in the UK spying on behalf of the Putin regime.

"He was kept under observation and arrested as he arrived at Gatwick to try and fly out of the country."

Authorities refused to release details on where the Russian man was attempting to travel via airplane.

It comes as spy chiefs in the UK are on heightened alert for nefarious cyber attacks after it was revealed earlier this month that Russian hackers had attempted to compromise the mobile devices of several Ukrainian and European officials.
