45-year-old Shaun Mandale, a servicing Civil Nuclear Constabulary police constable was due to enter pleas to six charges relating to child abuse images, however, he could not enter a plea due to ongoing industrial action by barristers across England and Wales, which left him with no legal representation.

Prosecutor Gerard Rogerson described the case against Mandale as "deeply serious."

After initial legal discussions, judge Ian Unsworth said that it would be inappropriate to allow Mandale to enter pleas when he was not being represented by his defence barrister.

Mandale, of Belvedere Street, Workington, Cumbria, spoke only to confirm his name and address and that he understood what he was accused of.

Three charges against him relate to him allegedly accessing indecent images of children between February 1, 2020, and July 1, 2021. The prosecution claim that he accessed: 7,886 indecent images of children that have been classed as Category A (the most serious kind of child abuse image). 2,597 Category B child abuse images, and 7,651 Category C child abuse images.

The disgraced police officer is also accused of possessing 96 extreme pornographic images, including bestiality, possessing prohibited images of children, and possessing more than 18,000 indecent child abuse images.

Judge Unsworth adjourned the case until October 21 when Mandale will enter his pleas at his next court appearance.
