A violent shark attack closed a Hawaii beach on Saturday and left one woman in a critical condition in hospital after suffering serious injuries.
The attack took place on Saturday afternoon at Paia Bay on Maui's North Shore, according to the Maui Police Department.
A 51-year-old French woman suffered a "serious bite" and had to be rescued from the water by onlookers. Members of the public attempted to administer first aid until the emergency services arrived.
Cinthia Pacheco, a visitor at a neighboring beach, said: "We had all the officers come, lifeguards and police department, asking that everyone stay out of the water. "I think my first reaction was really shocked, and I just felt so bad for the person."
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Heavy rain had caused the water to become murky, which experts say puts humans at greater risk of shark attacks. The beach was closed until midday on Sunday.
