A shootout erupted at the entrance of the Giants grocery store in Oxon Hill, Maryland, at approximately 10.25am on Friday.

Police officers were quickly dispatched to the scene, upon arrival they found two victims on the ground, both suffering from gunshot wounds.

The male security guard was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman, the suspected shoplifter, who was reportedly attempting to put stolen items in her backpack before the gunfight ensued, was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died shortly after.

A spokesperson for Prince George's County Police told WJLA that the suspect opened fire at the security guard after he confronted her about shoplifting - resulting in the pair exchanging shots at each other.

Major Zachary O'Lare, told the Washington Post: "It's quite concerning that these brazen acts are occurring across the country and in our backyard, especially right near our police division.

"There is a reason why the department has a division right in this shopping center, and that's for the safety and security of its citizens."
