Chelsea Grant and Xyaire Howard have been charged with the murder of Susan Hawkey

27-year-old Chelsea Grant and 22-year-old Xyaire Howard were charged with the murder of Susan Hawkey, 71, after she was found in her flat in Neasden, northwest London, "heavily decomposed", on September 26.

Officers found the victim with her hands tied together behind her back and brown parcel tape on her face.

The pair of suspected murderers have also been charged with two counts of fraud by false representation after being accused of using Ms Hawkey's bank cards.

The court heard how the couple had carried out 143 transactions using the victim's bank cards between 7 and 27 September, totalling £14,000.

The pair appeared in the dock at the Old Bailey before Judge Angela Rafferty today.

Ben Holt, prosecuting, said: "The allegation, in this case, involves the assault of a vulnerable victim that culminated in the victim being tied up in her own home."

Judge Rafferty set a date of December 21 for a plea hearing and a provisional trial from September 4 next year. Both defendants were remanded in custody.
