A dramatic police chase took place in Essex when a suspect smashed through a gate and tried to escape the pursuing armed officers down a railway track.
A driver rammed his car through a railway gate and attempted to escape armed police officers by driving on the train tracks in Essex. The suspect eventually abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot, resulting in officers bringing in sniffer dogs and a police helicopter to locate the runaway.
The vehicle was a white Fiat 500 and the incident took place near Chelmsford.
Police released images showing the car dumped by the side of the track where it had narrowly avoided causing a serious collision.
The suspect was eventually caught and arrested on a range of unspecified offences.
Essex police said on Twitter: "Essex Police firearms unit and QX01 found this clone Fiat 500 on the A12 at Margaretting.
"The vehicle failed to stop and smashed a railway gate driving down the track
"The driver ran away but with Essex Police dog section and National Police Air Service South East the driver was located and arrested for multiple offences.
"Thank you to British Transport Police London and British Transport Police Essex for their help and support dealing with this. Thanks to Network Rail for assisting."
